Termites

There are over 2,600 species of termites found worldwide, but they can generally be classified into one of three main groups: subterranean termites, drywood termites, and dampwood termites.

There are several species of termites found in Kenya, some of the most common include:
  • Macrotermes bellicosus: This species is a type of subterranean termite and is widely distributed in Kenya. It is known for causing extensive damage to buildings and crops.

  • Microtermes species: These termites are also subterranean and are commonly found in Kenya. They are known to cause damage to crops and trees, as well as to wooden structures and furniture.

  • Ancistrotermes species: This is a genus of dampwood termites and is commonly found in Kenya. They feed on decaying wood and can cause damage to trees and wooden structures.

  • Cryptotermes species: This genus of drywood termites is also found in Kenya and can cause damage to wooden structures and furniture.

In Kenya, termites can be controlled through various methods, including the use of chemical insecticides, physical barriers, and biological control methods such as the use of natural predators like ants. It's important to note that the use of chemical insecticides should be done in a safe and responsible manner by a licensed professional to avoid harm to human health and the environment.
